School Assemblies to Celebrate Students

School Assemblies to Celebrate Students

Everyone appreciates recognition for his or her successes. Celebrating our students and appreciating their contributions and successes helps to build a stronger school community. Celebrating general successes of the student body can be accomplished through school assemblies. School assemblies provide a break from the everyday routine of school and excite and motivate students. Students who feel appreciated by their teachers, principals, and other staff members are also more motivated to continue making the effort.

Motivating Students through School Assemblies

Motivating Students through School AssembliesOne benefit of celebrating student success is that it acts as a motivator to continue the positive efforts. Praise, to be effective, must be delivered in an appropriate manner. Obviously, school assemblies can be used to recognize specific individuals, but it can also be used to recognize the efforts of the student body as a whole. To be effective, praise must be sincere, specific, and realistic. Praise that does not meet these three criteria does not motivate students. As much as it is nice to be praised, we all know when the praise is not genuine, its a turn-off. No one respects individuals guilty of handing out false praise.

Celebrating students' success also builds confidence. Being told you are doing something well is a wonderful affirmation.  Celebrating the little successes helps students build up their confidence, leading to bigger and better successes.

Another benefit of celebrating success is helping students make the connection between effort and achievement - the connection that every teacher wants their students to understand. This connection, which may seem rather straightforward to us, is amazingly lacking in many students, who often view success on assignments and tests as due to some inherent ability, an easy marker, or pure luck. As the connection between achievement and effort strengthens, students are more and more willing to put the effort into what they are doing. As the effort increases, so does the number of successes. As the number of successes increases, so does the effort. It is a wonderful revolving ride to be a part of.

Guest Speakers and School Assemblies

Guest Speakers and School AssembliesBringing in a speaker to school assemblies is one effective method of celebrating your students. A good, strong guest speaker shows students that the school appreciates what they have been doing. Also, let's face it; students appreciate a break from the boring routine of everyday school life. If we are all honest, teachers and staff also appreciate the change.
